Lathlain Home Extension: Juxtaposition in Focus

There are two ways to approach a home extension; design the extension in the same character aesthetic as the original building, or design it in a completely contrasting, ultra-modern style.

By juxtaposing the old and the new, changes to the original building are visible to the naked eye, rather than mixed-up with imitation or replica pieces. Whilst some believe this to be the more authentic approach, others believe this ‘ruins’ the appeal of the original home. Over the last twenty-plus years, we’ve adopted both home extension approaches to varying degrees.

Our recent home extension project in Lathlain, certainly showcases the dramatic effect that can be created when you juxtapose the old and the new. Our client brief was to create an industrial rear extension… meaning contrast was inevitable given the existing home is of the post war era! Our design featured industrial elements and finishes such as polished concrete floors, exposed brick, raked ceilings, clean white lines and bold back cabinetry.

As the new extension didn’t flow seamlessly from the original section of the home, we embraced the difference and didn’t shy away from the contrasting design shift. Instead, we made a feature of it as you transition between the spaces by removing some of the old plaster and transforming what was just a wall into a piece of art.

Whilst the rear extension has a very different aesthetic and character to the original home, it provided an opportunity to repurpose elements entirely. The original stove fireplace in the kitchen is now home to the modern gas heater. This is especially important as heritage homes often require these to be maintained. Structurally these hoods are important as they support the chimney, which often has to stay in order to maintain the homes façade.

On other occasions, the structure must stay simply because of how expensive they can be to remove. Complete with a bench seat that extends along the wall of the new lounge room, this architectural feature now has a whole new (modern) lease on life… and what a feature it creates in the space!

We thoroughly enjoyed the creative opportunity this unapologetically ultra-modern industrial extension provided and have loved seeing our designs come to life. The only thing that beats this is receiving such heart-warming reviews from our clients –
