Home building trends during the COVID-19 pandemic

Since COVID-19, we are all spending much more time in our homes. In particular, all the family members at home with some working and others are studying. For some of us,our homes are not set up for family members to work and study from home. We are seeing an increase in requests for adding home offices and study spaces.

If you have adult kids who are living at home with you, they need a place to work or study and may prefer to not work or study in their rooms. For everyone’s well-being, it is important to provide a separation between work, family and personal space. When this is achieved, every member of the family can enjoy a healthy work-life balance and time on their own, when they need it. There is a growing need to provide more multi-functional zones based on each individual’s preferences for work, study, school education, exercise, meditation or quiet sitting.

We are major advocates for open plan living design. It allows the kitchen, dining and living areas to become shared zones which can encourage family conversations and connection. This is really important to ensure you maintain connection with your family members, giving you the opportunity to check in with one another. You can also use the open plan area as a family meeting space for meals and leisure activities and retreating to private spaces for personal activities, such as reading a book on your own or taking private phone calls.

We have realised the importance of having our elderly relatives close to us amidst the pandemic. There is comfort in having them live with us so we know they are safe. To accommodate them, you may like to add additional cohabitation spaces, or a granny flat in your backyard.

As important it is to spend time together, we sometimes need a place to retreat and spend time on our own. Some of us may be craving some time outdoors after spending so much time indoors. We recommend adding a quiet garden to enjoy some fresh air. By adding a view or outlook to courtyards and greenery, the natural light and ventilation can create a calming environment for you and your family. In addition, views of the street allow for connection to the environment outside of four walls.
